Most skincare brands describe their science in language designed to sound scientific rather than say anything. This is an attempt at the opposite, what the formulation decisions actually are, why they were made, and what they change about how the products behave on skin.

The founding decision, formulating without water

Starskin was founded in the Netherlands in 2015, built on Korean formulation and dermatological insight at a point when K-beauty was barely known in Western markets. The central decision made then still defines the range now, formulating without water as the base.

Water is the first ingredient in most skincare. It's inexpensive, it creates familiar textures, and it dilutes everything else. A formula led by water carries a lower concentration of everything that follows, and needs a heavier preservative system to stay microbiologically stable, since water is what allows microbial growth in the first place.

Replacing that base with something functional changes both. Red Carpet Ready is built on coconut fruit extract. Pink Cactus Pudding leads with Opuntia Coccinellifera fruit extract, reaching 99.3% natural content. The base itself does work rather than occupying volume.

Bio-cellulose, borrowed from wound care

Bio-cellulose was not developed for skincare. It came out of clinical wound dressing, where the requirement was a material that conforms to irregular surfaces without gaps, holds moisture against tissue for extended periods, and doesn't provoke a foreign-body response.

Those are the same three properties a sheet mask needs. Bio-cellulose is grown through fermentation rather than woven, which produces a fibre network fine enough to follow the contours of a face, the sides of the nose, under the eyes, along the jaw, where woven cotton lifts and leaves air gaps. It holds up to 100 times its weight in serum.

The relevance is straightforward: a sheet mask works by sealing. A material that seals properly delivers substantially more of its formula than one that approximates a seal. How that plays out in practice is worth understanding before choosing any mask.

PDRN, and the question of what an ingredient is for

Polydeoxyribonucleotide, PDRN, entered skincare from clinical use, where it was studied for tissue repair. In the DeepMelt Collagen PDRN mask it appears as Sodium DNA alongside Hydrolyzed Collagen, Sodium Hyaluronate, Niacinamide, and peptides, in a melting hydrogel format designed for a thirty-minute treatment window rather than daily use.

The format choice follows the ingredient. A concentrated regenerative treatment doesn't belong in a daily product, and building it as one would mean diluting it to a level where the concentration stops mattering.

Ingredient position, the detail most brands avoid discussing

Ingredient lists are ordered by concentration, which makes position more informative than presence. A product can legitimately claim to contain hyaluronic acid while carrying a trace amount that does nothing measurable.

In Pink Cactus Pudding, Sodium Hyaluronate sits fifth. In the DeepMelt PDRN mask, sixth. Those positions are the actual claim, more so than the ingredient names on the front of the packaging. It's also why reading an ingredient list properly tells you more than front-of-pack claims do.

What is excluded, and why that is a formulation decision too

Silicone-free and paraben-free across the range. Silicone creates an immediate smooth finish by sitting on the surface, which also means it can trap heat and sits between the skin and everything applied afterwards. Parabens are effective preservatives, and non-water based formulas require less preservation to begin with.

Fragrance is the other one. Synthetic fragrance is the most common single trigger for skin reactions, and it exists to make products more appealing rather than more effective. Formulas built without it remove that variable entirely, which matters most for reactive and sensitive skin.

Testing and safety

Individual products carry dermatological testing where it applies, noted on the product itself. Beyond testing, the safety position is structural, fewer ingredients overall, no synthetic fragrance, no silicone, and formulas whose base does not require heavy preservation.

Where the formulation came from

The range was developed with Korean dermatological expertise during a period when that knowledge was significantly ahead of Western formulation practice, particularly around delivery systems and material science. Bio-cellulose masks were standard in Korea years before they appeared in European retail.

That heritage is why the formulations hold up, they were built on principles that the wider industry has since caught up to, not on trends that dated.

The trade-off is cost and texture, non-water formulas are more expensive to produce and often feel different, richer or more oil-like, than what people expect.

Why does bio-cellulose come from wound care?

Effectively, yes, though the terminology varies. PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, and the commonly used source is salmon, which is why it appears on ingredient lists as Sodium DNA. It entered cosmetic use from clinical research into tissue repair. What matters practically is format and concentration, it's used in treatment products with defined windows rather than daily-use formulas, because concentrating it enough to be meaningful doesn't suit a product you apply every morning.

Why does ingredient position matter more than the ingredient list?

Because lists are ordered by concentration, not importance. A product can honestly claim to contain hyaluronic acid while carrying a trace amount with no measurable effect. Position five means substantially more than position twenty-five. This is the single most useful thing to know when comparing products, and it's why front-of-pack ingredient callouts tell you almost nothing on their own.

Are all Starskin products dermatologically tested?
