Peeling has an image problem. The word suggests something aggressive, skin coming away in sheets, redness, downtime. In practice, most peeling is invisible while it happens, and the version worth doing at home is closer to a well-formulated cleanse than to anything clinical.
What it actually does is worth understanding, because it explains why brightening treatments work considerably better on skin that has been peeled first.
The mechanism, which is chemistry rather than friction
Dead skin cells do not simply sit loose on the surface waiting to be brushed off. They are held in place by protein bonds called desmosomes, structures that link one cell to the next. Skin sheds naturally by breaking these bonds on a rolling cycle, roughly every twenty-eight days in younger skin, considerably slower with age.
A chemical peel accelerates that process. Alpha hydroxy acids, primarily lactic and glycolic, weaken those protein bonds so cells that were already due to shed release earlier and more evenly. Nothing is scraped or abraded. The skin lets go of what it was already preparing to lose.
This is why chemical peeling suits sensitive skin better than physical scrubbing does, despite sounding harsher. A scrub applies uneven mechanical force and can tear the barrier. An acid works uniformly across the surface at a controlled strength.
Why acid choice changes the outcome
Not all acids behave the same way, and the difference comes down to molecular size and solubility.
Glycolic acid has the smallest molecule of the common AHAs, which means it penetrates furthest. That makes it the most effective for texture and tone, and also the most likely to irritate. Lactic acid is larger, works closer to the surface, and holds water as it goes, which is why it suits drier and more reactive skin.

Where radiance actually comes from
This is the part most explanations skip. Radiance is not primarily a pigment phenomenon. It is an optical one.
Light hitting a smooth, even surface reflects back in a coherent direction, which reads as glow. Light hitting an uneven surface scatters in every direction, which reads as dullness regardless of how bright the underlying skin tone is. A layer of accumulated dead cells is, at a microscopic level, an extremely uneven surface.
Removing that layer changes how the skin handles light before it changes anything else. This is why the effect appears immediately after peeling, long before any pigment-related change could have occurred. The skin has not become lighter. It has become more reflective.

The pigment effect, which takes longer
The slower benefit is genuine but works differently. Melanin sits within skin cells, and pigmented cells migrate toward the surface as part of normal turnover. Accelerating that turnover means pigmented cells reach the surface and shed sooner, which gradually fades marks over weeks rather than minutes.
Pairing peeling with an ingredient that limits new melanin production compounds this. Niacinamide interrupts the transfer of pigment to surface cells, which is why the After Party mask, applied to freshly peeled skin, addresses both sides of the equation at once. Vitamin C, present in the Glowstar formula, does related work by moderating the enzyme that initiates pigment production in the first place.
At home versus in a clinic
The distinction is depth, not category. Peels are classified by how far into the skin they act.
Superficial peels work within the outermost layer only. Everything sold for home use falls here, and the intended pattern is repeated, moderate treatment rather than a single dramatic one. Medium and deep peels reach further, produce more significant change, and carry genuine downtime and risk. Those belong under professional supervision, and there is no home product that legitimately replicates them.
The at-home advantage is consistency. A superficial peel used twice weekly over months does compounding work that a single clinical session cannot, because it maintains turnover rather than resetting it once.
The over-exfoliation problem
More frequent peeling does not accelerate results, and past a point it reverses them.
The barrier needs intact surface cells to function. Strip them faster than they regenerate and the barrier becomes permeable, which shows up as sensitivity, redness, tightness, and often a rebound in dullness as the skin diverts resources into repair rather than renewal. The irony is that over-exfoliated skin frequently looks duller than skin that was never exfoliated at all.
One to three times a week is the working range for most skin. Reactive skin should start at once and build. The signal to reduce frequency is not visible peeling, it is any persistent tightness or stinging when applying products that were previously comfortable.
What happens immediately afterwards matters
Freshly peeled skin is briefly more permeable, which is both the opportunity and the risk.
The opportunity is absorption. Actives applied in that window reach further than they otherwise would, which is the entire logic behind peeling before masking rather than after. A brightening mask applied to unprepped skin is working through a layer that a peel would have removed.
The risk is that the same permeability applies to anything irritating. This is not the moment for a second active, a fragranced product, or anything untested. Understanding what is actually in a formula matters more here than at any other point in a routine.
Sun protection is not optional afterwards. AHAs measurably increase UV sensitivity, and the effect persists for around a week beyond the last application. Peeling without sun protection produces exactly the pigmentation the peeling was meant to address.
Where peeling sits relative to everything else
Peeling is preparation. It improves how well everything applied afterwards performs, and on its own it delivers the optical radiance effect but little else.
