What causes dry skin and why does it keep coming back?

Dry skin happens when the skin barrier breaks down and loses its ability to hold moisture. The usual fix, overuse more water-based product, often backfires. What matters isn't whether a formula contains water. It's how concentrated the actives are, and whether anything keeps them on the skin long enough to work.

When the barrier is compromised, water escapes faster than skin can replace it. Dermatologists call this Transepidermal Water Loss; felt as tightness, flaking, or dryness that never quite goes away.

Four things make it worse
Environmental exposure
Pollution, cold air and UV weaken the barrier daily. Dry indoor air from heating and air conditioning accelerates the loss further. Antioxidants help counteract this.
Over-cleansing
Harsh cleansers strip the natural lipid layer that holds moisture in. Without it, everything applied afterwards evaporates faster.
Low-concentration formulas
When actives are diluted too far, regardless of base, there isn't enough left to bind moisture. Position on the ingredient list tells you more than the front-of-pack claim does, here's how to check.
Age
Ceramide and hyaluronic acid production naturally slows, measurably from the mid-twenties onwards.

The fix isn't avoiding water, it's high-concentration actives (like hyaluronic acid and PDRN) held against the skin by a delivery material that doesn't let them evaporate before they absorb. That's what bio-cellulose does that cotton can't.

Concentration over formula type
A well-formulated serum with high active concentration outperforms a product with too little payload to matter. More on how our formulas are built.

How do hydrating face masks work for dry skin?

Unlike moisturisers, a well-fitted mask creates a sealed layer between formula and skin, forcing actives to absorb instead of evaporate. The material and the formula determine everything. A loosely fitting cotton mask with a diluted serum loses most of its actives to the air. A bio-cellulose mask with a high-concentration formula holds them against the skin until they're absorbed.

What's doing the work
Bio-cellulose
Holds up to 100x its weight in water and conforms to every curve. Zero air gaps, maximum absorption. Shop bio-cellulose masks
PDRN
Repairs moisture retention at a cellular level. Try the PDRN hydrogel mask
Hyaluronic acid
Binds water within the skin, provided something holds it there. Why application matters more than concentration here
In 10–20 minutes
Absorption increases the moment the mask seals against skin. Visibly more hydrated, plumped, and settled by the time you remove it.
With consistent use
Each treatment reinforces the barrier. Over time, skin retains hydration longer and needs less to maintain results.

One mask shows what's possible. Consistent use changes how skin behaves day to day, the immediate result comes from the sealing layer, the long-term result from a barrier that gets stronger with each treatment.

Bio-cellulose: the gold standard
Originally developed for wound healing, adopted by dermatologists for adhering like a second skin with zero air gaps. The full story behind the material.

FAQ

What is the best hydrating face mask for dry skin?

The difference is in the formula and the material.

For immediate deep hydration:

Red Carpet Ready bio-cellulose mask with amino acid complex, Brown Algae and Saccharide Isomerate. 72-hour hydration in 15 to 20 minutes.

For regenerative repair:

PDRN Collagen Mask and its solidified serum that melts on contact. PDRN, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid. Repairs moisture retention at cellular level. 30 minutes.

For organic barrier repair:

The Pink Cactus Mask, a rich two-step sheet mask with 84% cactus extracts, Prickly Pear Seed Oil and Hyaluronic Acid. Designed specifically for dry and dehydrated skin.

Why Starskin® works differently:

Our formulas are non-water based. No dilution, giving a higher concentration of actives from the first application, something most brands cannot claim. Here's why that matters.

How often should you use a hydrating face mask and how do you get the best results?

Starskin® hydrating face masks are recommended for use 1 to 2 times per week for consistent results on dry or dehydrated skin. The Pink Cactus Pudding and 7-Second Facial Pads can be used daily, mornings and evenings. For all other masks, apply to clean skin after cleansing and toner. Do not rinse after removing, pat the remaining essence directly into the skin.

How to use for best results:

  1. Exfoliate first with Glowstar Puff, removes dead skin, improves absorption
  2. Cleanse and pat dry
  3. Select your favourite face mask, we recommend refrigerating the sachet 10 minutes before use for an extra cooling effect
  4. Distribute serum in the sachet before opening
  5. Apply mask, smooth out air pockets, see the full technique guide
  6. Leave on 15 to 20 min (bio-cellulose) or 30 min (PDRN hydrogel)
  7. Remove and do not rinse. Pat remaining serum into the skin
  8. Follow with moisturiser to seal in the actives
What is the best Korean sheet mask for dry skin in the UK?

Starskin® is available at Harrods, Douglas, and Revolve, consistently rated among the best Korean sheet masks in the UK. The Red Carpet Ready® bio-cellulose mask and the DeepMelt PDRN hydrogel mask are the two most recommended for dry and dehydrated skin.

Our formulas are non-water based, we use fermented coconut juice, cactus extracts, or botanical bases. No dilution means higher concentration of active ingredients and more visible results.

Next to our rich serums, our face masks are made of bio-cellulose, a clinical material used by dermatologists for wound healing. This material sits closely to the skin, holds 100x its weight in serum and leaves zero air gaps, optimising the transfer of serums onto the skin.

Clean since 2015:

  • Silicone-free
  • Paraben-free
  • No harsh preservatives
  • No fillers
Are hydrating face masks good for sensitive skin?

Yes. Our materials are biocompatible and hypoallergenic, and our formulas are suitable for reactive and sensitive skin. Silicone-free and paraben-free. Our formulas also contain organic botanicals carefully selected to be gentle and support your skin. The Pink Cactus Mask and Camellia mask are both recommended for sensitive skin.

Different skin types need different approaches. If your skin is extra sensitive, we always recommend a patch test. Apply the serum to a small section of skin and check the reaction before full use.

How do you build a hydrating skincare routine for dry skin?

With our rich serums and formulas, the routine is simple. The full routine breakdown is here.

  1. Exfoliate 1 to 3 times a week. Chemical peels are gentler on the skin than physical scrubs. The Glowstar Peeling Puff contains AHAs, Vitamin C and fermented botanicals that gently clean and remove dead cells. Improves mask absorption significantly and one puff is reusable up to 3 times.
  2. Use a hydrating mask 1 to 2 times a week. Apply after exfoliating or cleansing. You do not need to rinse, pat the serum into your skin and let it absorb.
  3. Use your serum or hydrating cream if your skin is dry or feels tight. The Pink Cactus Pudding contains 99.3% natural ingredients, is non-water based, and can be used every day, including under makeup.

If you need to prep your skin for an event, you can apply makeup after masking. The remaining serum creates a smooth, hydrated, plumped base for foundation.
