What causes dry skin and why does it keep coming back?

Dry skin happens when the skin barrier breaks down and loses its ability to hold moisture. The usual fix, overuse more water-based product, often backfires. What matters isn't whether a formula contains water. It's how concentrated the actives are, and whether anything keeps them on the skin long enough to work.

When the barrier is compromised, water escapes faster than skin can replace it. Dermatologists call this Transepidermal Water Loss; felt as tightness, flaking, or dryness that never quite goes away.

Four things make it worse
Environmental exposure
Pollution, cold air and UV weaken the barrier daily. Dry indoor air from heating and air conditioning accelerates the loss further. Antioxidants help counteract this.
Over-cleansing
Harsh cleansers strip the natural lipid layer that holds moisture in. Without it, everything applied afterwards evaporates faster.
Low-concentration formulas
When actives are diluted too far, regardless of base, there isn't enough left to bind moisture. Position on the ingredient list tells you more than the front-of-pack claim does, here's how to check.
Age
Ceramide and hyaluronic acid production naturally slows, measurably from the mid-twenties onwards.

How do hydrating face masks work for dry skin?

Unlike moisturisers, a well-fitted mask creates a sealed layer between formula and skin, forcing actives to absorb instead of evaporate. The material and the formula determine everything. A loosely fitting cotton mask with a diluted serum loses most of its actives to the air. A bio-cellulose mask with a high-concentration formula holds them against the skin until they're absorbed.

How often should you use a hydrating face mask and how do you get the best results?

Starskin® hydrating face masks are recommended for use 1 to 2 times per week for consistent results on dry or dehydrated skin. The Pink Cactus Pudding and 7-Second Facial Pads can be used daily, mornings and evenings. For all other masks, apply to clean skin after cleansing and toner. Do not rinse after removing, pat the remaining essence directly into the skin.

How to use for best results:

  1. Exfoliate first with Glowstar Puff, removes dead skin, improves absorption
  2. Cleanse and pat dry
  3. Select your favourite face mask, we recommend refrigerating the sachet 10 minutes before use for an extra cooling effect
  4. Distribute serum in the sachet before opening

  6. Leave on 15 to 20 min (bio-cellulose) or 30 min (PDRN hydrogel)
  7. Remove and do not rinse. Pat remaining serum into the skin
  8. Follow with moisturiser to seal in the actives

How do you build a hydrating skincare routine for dry skin?

  1. Exfoliate 1 to 3 times a week. Chemical peels are gentler on the skin than physical scrubs. The Glowstar Peeling Puff contains AHAs, Vitamin C and fermented botanicals that gently clean and remove dead cells. Improves mask absorption significantly and one puff is reusable up to 3 times.
  2. Use a hydrating mask 1 to 2 times a week. Apply after exfoliating or cleansing. You do not need to rinse, pat the serum into your skin and let it absorb.
  3. Use your serum or hydrating cream if your skin is dry or feels tight. The Pink Cactus Pudding contains 99.3% natural ingredients, is non-water based, and can be used every day, including under makeup.

If you need to prep your skin for an event, you can apply makeup after masking. The remaining serum creates a smooth, hydrated, plumped base for foundation.
